Mission of the Month: Giving Myrtle the White Abalone a Ride

Meet Myrtle. Myrtle was recently a distinguished LightHawk passenger. She got a ride from Long Beach, California to the Bodega Marine Lab in Bodega Bay, California as part of our ongoing partnership to restore white abalone population on the Pacific Coast.

Myrtle was on the move to participate in a captive breeding program. She is one of 10 total wild origin white abalone in captivity, so she offers huge potential to transform the recovery of the species by increasing the gene pool.

Photo of the Month

Mountains in the Upper Skagit River area of Washington State.

A recent flight in the state of Washington allowed photographer Benjamin Drummond to capture this image in the Upper Skagit River area. Photos and video imagery were captured on the flight for a nonprofit film. The filmmakers say, "Between the headwaters of the Skagit River in British Columbia and Ross Dam in Washington State, the Upper Skagit remains both wild and confined as it cuts across borders, eras and cultures. Our film will bring audiences to the river’s banks and weave a chronology of the watershed with why it’s worth protecting today. The goal is to help local residents, from students to decision makers, understand the critical importance of this river to communities and ecosystems on both sides of the border, and to inspire continued collaborative stewardship of the Upper Skagit watershed."
