Credit: Evan Bulla, Trout Unlimited LightHawk is helping to document a historic moment for free-flowing rivers and salmon recovery in the Pacific Northwest. For more than a century, four dams along the Klamath River in southern Oregon and northern California have harmed water quality and blocked salmon, steelhead, and Pacific lamprey from migrating upstream, keeping these native fish from over 400 miles of spawning and rearing habitat. It is a major win for local tribes and environmental groups who are hopeful salmon will return. Photo of the MonthA beautiful sunset from the air, captured during a flight transporting an endangered red wolf. The flight took place in November of 2023 and transported one wolf to a new home where it was paired with another wolf for breeding. These transports increase the genetic diversity of the captive population as part of recovery efforts. Captive breeding is an essential component of Red Wolf recovery. As of February 2023, there were approximately 235 red wolves in 49 Red Wolf SAFE facilities across the country. This flight provided transport for one adult male red wolf from the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, TX to the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY. |
