January 2007, Issue 1

LightHawk's new monthly update, WayPoint, was created to share some of the good news we on staff learn about daily. Each month, you will receive a LightHawk success story that illustrates the critical role we play in conservation efforts throughout North and Central America through the unique perspective of flight. We hope you enjoy WayPoint and will share with others our success stories from above.

VICTORY for New Mexico’s
"Valley of Life"

For the past three years, the exquisite Valle Vidal region of New Mexico has been the focus of extensive LightHawk support. This lush mountain basin, located in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is home to New Mexico’s largest elk herd. In addition to wildlife, the area is prized for its outstanding scenic and recreational opportunities. Under the present administration, the U.S. Forest Service has been under intense pressure to open the Valle Vidal to destructive coalbed methane drilling which would forever change the character of this pristine area.

LightHawk volunteer pilots have provided educational flights to protect and preserve this unique natural area. LightHawk has flown U.S. Congressional staffers from both sides of the aisle, local, national, and international media representatives, staffers from the NM governor’s office, and local elected officials. With our partners in the Coalition for the Valle Vidal, LightHawk has worked for the permanent protection of this extraordinary resource.

On Dec. 13th, 2006, the Valle Vidal Protection Act was signed into law, permanently protecting over 100,000 acres from mineral extraction. LightHawk is proud to have played a strong role in this exciting victory!

Quotes From The Flight

"I felt the arguments to drill or not to drill were well presented as we flew over areas on Ted Turner’s property which were referred to as 'best case scenario' green drilling, which still scar the land and compromise water quality and quantity for future generations. The best example was presented by facts, which are what we will have to relate back to our communities when we discuss this issue. Is the loss of the Valle Vidal worth one day’s use of natural gas in this country? Point blank, I say NO! The costs alone outweigh this without question. We as community leaders and as individuals must make this clear."
-- Kerry Perkins, Councilman, Village of Eagle Nest, NM

"The area is beautiful. The enthusiasm of the pilot [Merry Schroeder] coupled with her knowledge of the area made for an informative and enchanting trip. Since we will be writing about this area for the Governor it is most helpful to have seen it."
-- Carol Leach, Solicitor’s Office, State of New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department

"LightHawk did an excellent job coordinating logistics and ensuring a safe and accommodating trip. We appreciate the pilots volunteering their service and expertise so that these important projects can be more easily accessed."
-- Sarah Cobb, Field Representative for Congressman Tom Udall
